Sharing:
Lamentations 120 “O Lord, think about this! Should you treat your own people this way? Should mothers eat their own children, those they once bounced on their knees? Should priests and prophets be killed within the Lord’s Temple? 21 “See them lying in the streets— young and old, boys and girls, killed by the swords of the enemy. You have killed them in your anger, slaughtering them without mercy. 22 “You have invited terrors from all around, as though you were calling them to a day of feasting. In the day of the Lord’s anger, no one has escaped or survived. The enemy has killed all the children whom I carried and raised.”Philemon 1Paul’s Appeal for Onesimus 8 That is why I am boldly asking a favor of you. I could demand it in the name of Christ because it is the right thing for you to do. 9 But because of our love, I prefer simply to ask you. Consider this as a request from me—Paul, an old man and now also a prisoner for the sake of Christ Jesus.[b] 10 I appeal to you to show kindness to my child, Onesimus. I became his father in the faith while here in prison. 11 Onesimus[c] hasn’t been of much use to you in the past, but now he is very useful to both of us. 12 I am sending him back to you, and with him comes my own heart. 13 I wanted to keep him here with me while I am in these chains for preaching the Good News, and he would have helped me on your behalf. 14 But I didn’t want to do anything without your consent. I wanted you to help because you were willing, not because you were forced. 15 It seems you lost Onesimus for a little while so that you could have him back forever. 16 He is no longer like a slave to you. He is more than a slave, for he is a beloved brother, especially to me. Now he will mean much more to you, both as a man and as a brother in the Lord. 17 So if you consider me your partner, welcome him as you would welcome me. 18 If he has wronged you in any way or owes you anything, charge it to me. 19 I, Paul, write this with my own hand: I will repay it. And I won’t mention that you owe me your very soul! 20 Yes, my brother, please do me this favor[d] for the Lord’s sake. Give me this encouragement in Christ. 21 I am confident as I write this letter that you will do what I ask and even more! 22 One more thing—please prepare a guest room for me, for I am hoping that God will answer your prayers and let me return to you soon.Psalm 101A psalm of David. 1 I will sing of your love and justice, Lord. I will praise you with songs. 2 I will be careful to live a blameless life— when will you come to help me? I will lead a life of integrity in my own home. 3 I will refuse to look at anything vile and vulgar. I hate all who deal crookedly; I will have nothing to do with them. 4 I will reject perverse ideas and stay away from every evil. 5 I will not tolerate people who slander their neighbors. I will not endure conceit and pride. 6 I will search for faithful people to be my companions. Only those who are above reproach will be allowed to serve me. 7 I will not allow deceivers to serve in my house, and liars will not stay in my presence. 8 My daily task will be to ferret out the wicked and free the city of the Lord from their grip.Proverbs 26:20 20 Fire goes out without wood, and quarrels disappear when gossip stops.Sharing: God's punishment on Israel and Judah were very severe, He let their enemies punish them by just turning His face away from them. Reading Lamentation 1&2, I am most fearful that God's righteousness may one day do this to me, letting me suffered from my enemies, and they could kill all of my children whose once bounced on our knees. May God help me and my family to walk in the path that pleases you.
When I read Philemon 1, I saw Christ's love in Paul in his letter to Philemon when he was prisoner of preaching the Good news about Christ Jesus, but he is thinking about Philemon and ..... and the church that meets in Philemon's house. Paul is thinking of the church in a whole and everybody within it. Further Paul related the wish of blessings from his God his Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ that graces and peace would be coming from. Paul stressed on the joy and comfort he got from Philemon's generosity (from faith as he understand and experience all the good things we have in Christ) and love (kindness to people of God). Paul also asks one special favor from Philemon to welcome Onesimus as if he is Paul in these following ways:
1. Use our love (Paul's and Philemon's) to treat him as Paul is confident that they do not have to bother Christ to grant Onesimus His love
2. Show kindness to his child in Christ as Paul became his father in the faith while in prison
3. Use Onesimus even he was not useful before, but Paul see his usefulness for both him and for Philemon
4. Receive Onesimus as Paul is sending him back to Philemon, and with him comes Paul's own heart
5. Ask Philemon to let him use Onesimus from the position as a slave to a beloved brother and a as a man and brother in the Lord
6. Welcome Onesimus as Paul's partner, and Paul will be responsible for anything that Onesimus may wrong him or owe him (not as a repayment to Philemon's savior)
7. Accept this favor and that will give Paul the encouragement in Christ that what he does in prison is extended to beyond the prison
8. Philemon will do more than what Paul askes for here
9. Prepare a guest room for Paul, as he is hoping that God will answer his prayers to let him return to Philemon
10. Paul is relating greetings from other brothers in prison, Epaphras, Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, and Luke
11. May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.
What a loving letter that we can learn from.
May I use Psalm 101 to be my prayer to God.
Remember quarrels disappear when gossip stops likes fire goes out without wood. Do no gossip and quarrels can't last.
Please forgive me of not having the time to streamline this, but it is straight from my dairy

The cloak is to keep people warm; but reading will make people’s soul aglow with spiritual insight and discernment.
Even though Paul was imprisoned, he would never stop learning. He read books (那些書 scrolls) of his time (like today’s Times Magazine or CNN reports, etc.) in order to understand the current events of his time and keep abreast with the contemporary cultures so that he might effectively make redemptive contact points with various people. More importantly, he longed to read the Scripture (皮卷 parchments) as a source of his daily spiritual nourishment.
How much more should we, as servants of God, read books and the Bible? I don’t know about others, to me, if I stop reading, I feel inadequate and dry to preach anymore. The best I could do is to rehash the overnight rice (炒冷飯).
One time I was told by a “spiritual” man who said to me, “I don’t read other books; I only read Bible.” I was taken aback for a moment but I respected him. But I retorted by asking: “I believe you say this is for my own good. Thank you. OK, if I write down all your words and put them altogether to make a nice spiritual book, would you want me to read it?” “Ah! I wouldn’t call it a book, I would call it a sharing”, argued him. “Alright, if I read CS Lewis’ book, is it equivalent to this great brother sharing with me his thoughts?” I thought I got him

It is an enlightened comparison between God’s character and Cretans’ character, given by the apostle Paul. Paul wanted Titus to be aware of the false teachings and lies prevailed over Crete -- he needs to face them bravely and preach “sound doctrines” to the congregation, in light of God does not lie and He has the hope of eternal life. Jeremiah 42: 1-6
1 Then all the army officers, including Johanan son of Kareah and Jezaniah son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least to the greatest approached 2 Jeremiah the prophet and said to him, “Please hear our petition and pray to the LORD your God for this entire remnant. For as you now see, though we were once many, now only a few are left. 3 Pray that the LORD your God will tell us where we should go and what we should do.” 4 “I have heard you,” replied Jeremiah the prophet. “I will certainly pray to the LORD your God as you have requested; I will tell you everything the LORD says and will keep nothing back from you.” 5 Then they said to Jeremiah, “May the LORD be a true and faithful witness against us if we do not act in accordance with everything the LORD your God sends you to tell us. 6 Whether it is favorable or unfavorable, we will obey the LORD our God, to whom we are sending you, so that it will go well with us, for we will obey the LORD our God.”
Jeremiah 42:1-2
1 When Jeremiah finished telling the people all the words of the LORD their God—everything the LORD had sent him to tell them— 2 Azariah son of Hoshaiah and Johanan son of Kareah and all the arrogant men said to Jeremiah, “You are lying! The LORD our God has not sent you to say, ‘You must not go to Egypt to settle there.’

(Devotional Sharing)

Sharing: Comforting is what we need desperately when we walk on the pilgrimage on this earth. The passage says God the father granted us 1. eternal comfort 2. good hope; both are not bound by time. They are not temporal. If we can receive this true comfort, our hearts will be lifted to the time frame of the heavenly kingdom, we then can start to learn how to live on this earth as we are in heaven. God! May you help and comfort us.

Psalm 84 1 How lovely is your dwelling place, O LORD Almighty! 2 My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. 10 Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked. 11 For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless. 12 O LORD Almighty, blessed is the man who trusts in you.
Proverbs 25: 15 Through patience a ruler can be persuaded, and a gentle tongue can break a bone.

Jeremiah 22:3
3 This is what the LORD says: Do what is just and right. Rescue from the hand of his oppressor the one who has been robbed. Do no wrong or violence to the alien, the fatherless or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place.
Jeremiah 22:16
16 " He defended the cause of the poor and needy, and so all went well. Is that not what it means to know me?" declares the LORD.
Sharing:
God gave few last commands through Jeremiah to Israel. To care for the oppressed, aliens, fatherless and the widow and to defend the poor and the needy.
Summarized- to love and have mercy just like Him.
To Know God is to have His characters- To love and to have mercy for others.

3 (1 Thessalonians 3)
But Timothy has just now come to us from you and has brought good news about your faith and love. He has told us that you always have pleasant memories of us and that you long to see us, just as we also long to see you. Therefore, brothers and sisters, in all our distress and persecution we were encouraged about you because of your faith.
Sharing:
It is really encouraging to Paul that church at Thessaloniki has faith and love and their longing to see Paul, based on Timothy’s report. I think this is a great comfort to him as he couldn’t stay with the church longer. The growth of the church at Thessaloniki reminds me of what Paul said in the 1 Corinthians 3:5-6 “What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task. I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow” 亞波羅算什麼‧保羅算什麼‧無非是執事,照主所賜給他們各人的,引導你們相信‧我栽種了,亞波羅澆灌了‧惟有神叫他生長‧ It is God’s sovereignty and mercifulness that we can serve Him….

Jeremiah 12
Jeremiah Questions the Lord’s Justice
1 Lord, you always give me justice
when I bring a case before you.
So let me bring you this complaint:
Why are the wicked so prosperous?
Why are evil people so happy?
The Lord’s Reply to Jeremiah
5 “If racing against mere men makes you tired,
how will you race against horses?
If you stumble and fall on open ground,
what will you do in the thickets near the Jordan?
6 Even your brothers, members of your own family,
have turned against you.
They plot and raise complaints against you.
Do not trust them,
no matter how pleasantly they speak.
Thessalonians 1
6 So you received the message with joy from the Holy Spirit in spite of the severe suffering it brought you. In this way, you imitated both us and the Lord. 7 As a result, you have become an example to all the believers in Greece—throughout both Macedonia and Achaia.[d
Thessalonians 2
4 For we speak as messengers approved by God to be entrusted with the Good News. Our purpose is to please God, not people. He alone examines the motives of our hearts. 5 Never once did we try to win you with flattery, as you well know.
Proverbs 24:30-34
30 I walked by the field of a lazy person,
the vineyard of one with no common sense.
31 I saw that it was overgrown with nettles.
It was covered with weeds,
and its walls were broken down.
32 Then, as I looked and thought about it,
I learned this lesson:
33 A little extra sleep, a little more slumber,
a little folding of the hands to rest—
34 then poverty will pounce on you like a bandit;
scarcity will attack you like an armed robber.
Sharing: God told me today that if I excuse myself to have a little extra sleep, a little more slumber, a little folding of my hands to rest, then poverty will pounce on me like a bandit, and scarcity will attack me like an armed robber. Even I think I know I should not waste time in my life for standing by doing nothing or on meaningless pursuit, but many times my progress is stopped by others. Thank you God for also giving me the passages that my purpose in life is not to please people but God, and even if my brothers, and members of my own family have turned against me, I should not trust them no matter how pleasantly or unpleasantly they speak to me. Dear Lord, thank you of being with me while I bear the suffering for the sake of your glory

Jeremiah 11:6
The LORD said to me, “Proclaim all these words in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem: ‘Listen to the terms of this covenant and follow them. 7 From the time I brought your ancestors up from Egypt until today, I warned them again and again, saying, “Obey me.”
Sharing: The Lord earnestly protested to and warned His people, the Israelites, at the time that He brought them up out of the land of Egypt, to the days of Jeremiah, asking them to listen to His words. But the Israelites did not listen or pay attention to His words ; instead, they followed the stubbornness of their evil hearts and other gods to serve them.
Today, God still gives His words, the Bible, to those who were brought out from the dominion of darkness into the kingdom of the Son he loves, and asks them to listen to and abide in His words so that they may have life, and have it to the full. Do we, as Christians, treasure God's words and read them persistently, or we do not have time for it because of busy work life, family life and...................? May God help us to carry out the desire we have to do what is good.

Colossians 3
12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

What a claim! And this claim came from no others but a Pharisee, Paul. I sometimes wonder why, how and what did God do this and that. Paul is saying search no more, the answer is in Christ. God’s plan, love, wisdom, and glory are all in Christ. The most amazing thing is God gave Christ to us, He is in us and we are in Him! We need to continue to discover the riches of Christ.

Pr 24:23 These also are sayings of the wise: To show partiality in judging is not good:
Pr 24:24 Whoever says to the guilty, "You are innocent"-- peoples will curse him and nations denounce him.
Pr 24:25 But it will go well with those who convict the guilty, and rich blessing will come upon them.
Sharing: Let us consider a famous quotation from Blaise Pascal (1623-1662):
“In essentials, unity. In nonessentials, liberty. And in all things, charity.”
- In essentials, unity.
- In nonessentials, liberty.
- And in all things, charity.
Are these not HoCL’s core values? Pray that God may give us the wisdom of discernment of what is guilty and of what is innocent and to tell apart what is essential and what is nonessential

Isaiah 66
This is what the LORD says: “Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. Where is the house you will build for me? Where will my resting place be?
